Despite previously claiming she supported trans rights, Right-wing provocateur and current Trump sycophant Nancy Mace has recently learned how to become the center of attention among her fellow conservatives: complete and total unabashed bigotry. Lately, Mace has targeted trans women who need to go to the bathroom in the Capitol — specifically one trans woman, incoming Democratic Rep. Sarah McBride. While Mace has been spewing the “men in women’s bathrooms” garbage often uttered by irredeemable bigots, a Nancy Mace aide broke into a woman’s home and got in her bed. Mace, for some reason, never mentions this.
Mace recently introduced a resolution banning transgender women using the correct bathrooms in the Capitol. House Speaker Mike Johnson joined in the crusade, changing the rules solely to make McBride’s life more difficult. McBride, however, has remained the adult in the room. Responding to the bigotry and discrimination already leveled at her before her term even begins, McBride pointed out that the attacks on her are simply an attempt to distract from the GOP’s horrific policy proposals and positions. Mace says she “absolutely” intends to target McBride with her hatred.
“It is an attempt to distract from what they are actually doing. Every single time, every single time we hear them say the word ‘trans,’ look what they’re doing with their right hand. Look at what they’re doing to pick the pocket of American workers, to fleece seniors by privatizing Social Security and Medicare,” McBride, who has a private bathroom and refuses to allow the GOP to use her as a prop in weeks of ongoing outrage porn, told CBS’ Face the Nation.
With all the focus on “men” — a pejorative transphobes throw at transgender women — in women’s bathrooms, one might assume Mace would have a bigger issue with cisgender men invading women’s bedrooms. But, not a peep.
Nancy Mace says she wants to “protect women” — but that can’t possibly be true because Sean Brislin exists. Brislin, Mace’s legislative director, once broke into a woman’s home and climbed into her bed. The Advocate reports that cisgender male Brislin got drunk and broke into the home of a Northwest D.C. woman while she was taking out the trash. He then climbed into her bed and passed out.
The woman returned home to find Brislin and, alarmed, called the police. Brislin was arrested and eventually escaped accountability over the victim’s objections by agreeing to deferred prosecution in exchange for 32 hours of community service, alcohol treatment, and staying away from the woman and her home. “I now feel like a stranger in my own dwelling,” the victim said in the hearing in which Mace’s employee was given a slap on the wrist. But Mace doesn’t care about keeping women safe or any of the other excuses conservatives concoct to justify their discrimination and hatred.
“If you think this bill is about protecting women and not simply a ploy to get on Fox News, you’ve been fooled,” Mace’s former communications director, Natalie Johnson, said on Twitter after Mace ramped up her transphobic antics.
“Protecting women” in Congress would be introducing a bill to bar Matt Gaetz, a sexual predator with an affinity for underage girls, from ever walking those halls again, rather than dropping a messaging bill that’s sole goal is getting on TV,” John says in another tweet.
Mace and her fellow Republicans don’t care about protecting women. Or children. Or anyone. Anytime a conservative concern-trolls about “protecting” anyone, it is simply a cover they clumsily pull over their hateful statements and actions — one that fools no one but the most feeble-minded and bigoted among us.
