The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit demanding that the court block certification of an Alaska Senate race if the Republican candidate loses. And Donald Trump openly admitted that he ordered them to do it.
The race between Democratic challenger Mary Peltola and Republican incumbent Senator Dan Sullivan is so close that Trump and the GOP are panicking. In fact, they are panicking so much that Trump forced the DOJ to file a lawsuit asking the court to block the certification of the election results, but only if the Republican loses.
Their main gripe is that a candidate with the same name as Sullivan, known as Daniel J. Sullivan, is appearing on the ballot as an independent. Trump and his DOJ of minions contend that this is unfair because their own uneducated voters, whom Trump has frequently professed his love for, will accidentally confuse the two candidates and vote for the wrong one, even though both are clearly marked on the ballot.
The Alaska Supreme Court had already ruled that there’s no problem with the other Sullivan appearing on the ballot as a candidate. In fact, no rules prevent two candidates with similar names from appearing on the same ballot for the same office. Such rules would disenfranchise candidates who want to put their own name in contention for political office. The only rules for running for office are found in the Constitution, which says nothing about two people with the same name running in the same race.
Yet, Trump openly admitted that he ordered the DOJ to file the lawsuit anyway. “I’m the one who said to do it, Trump said in Florida.
This is a blatant attempt to steal an election, and it’s so flimsy that it should be laughed out of court, just like every single one of Trump’s election lawsuits after he lost to former President Joe Biden in 2020. Clearly, Trump is going to use the DOJ to cheat in this election. The courts should put an end to it now.
