Decades ago, my high school had student council elections. One time, some of the more moronic bullies got together and put one of their friends (a mentally handicapped kid) up to be treasurer, saying he would steal all the money. They thought it was hilarious, they were dumb enough to think it might work, and they managed to vote him in.
School administrators stepped in and immediately stripped him of the treasurer position, and sanity ruled the day. If only the USA were run like my high school.
The “Leopards Eating Faces Party” idea is almost a decade old, and is a more pithy re-framing of a quote from WW2:
In essence, both statements are about the unintended consequences of voting against your best interests, which is exactly what America did on November 5th. From prices spiking due to tariffs to women literally dying without access to lifesaving procedures, not to mention what the mass deportations are going to do to the workforce… the next four years are going to be a hard lesson in not listening to history.
Fighting The Face-Eating Leopards
Maybe we can hold out hope for two years from now. It’s entirely possible that, in two years the initial policy decisions from the Trump reich will be enacted and squeezing people. Elon did say that there would be some austerity in the cards, after all.
Let’s be honest, while his policies are apparently popular with the massively uninformed, they are a long list of unintended consequences waiting to be unleashed on an unsuspecting population. Remember the student council election I led with? Ask yourself what would have happened if the bullies had successfully gotten their martinet installed.
Assuming that there was any money to steal to begin with, they wouldn’t have gotten much, and the guy who would have been playing treasurer wasn’t exactly Al Capone (nor were any of the bullies who got him elected), so the likelihood of them getting caught… well it was essentially certain. So, little money, kicked out of school, likely off to juvenile hall.
Trump is actually a worse candidate than that erstwhile treasurer. Sure, he’s nowhere near as stupid, but that’s part of the problem. Trump is just barely smart enough and absolutely conniving enough to manage to squeak his and his people’s harebrained schemes past the American public.
That also means he’s just barely smart enough to permanently and fatally damage democracy… and we don’t have principals and administration that can stop him when he goes off the rails.
Fighting these face-eating leopards begins with acknowledging that they will, inevitably come for you. Remember that your best interests often align with everyone regardless of creed or color or sexual orientation. Remember that the people who aren’t trying to eat your face aren’t some mysterious and scary other, they’re just people who want life and liberty, just like you.
The only way the face-eating leopards win is if they successfully divide us. It’ll start with “illegals”, assuming you don’t care because YOU’RE not illegal.
