Donald Trump outright accused New York Times reporter David Sanger of treason for not covering his war in Iran the way he wants it to be covered.
Trump’s recent visit to China went disastrously, as Xi Jinping referred to the United States as a nation in decline and humiliated him from the moment Air Force One landed to the moment it took off. One of the topics, of course, was Iran.
China is an ally of Iran and a top buyer of Iranian oil. Needless to say, it didn’t go well, since Trump’s war is largely seen as a failure that is crashing the American economy and creating an international energy crisis.
Trump doesn’t want to hear this, which is why when NYT reporter David Sanger asked him about Iran on Air Force One, Trump lashed out and accused Sanger and the New York Times of committing treason by not printing his delusional claims about how the war is going.
“I had a total military victory,” Trump said. “But the fake news guys like you, write incorrectly. You’re a fake guy. Guys like you write about it incorrectly. We had a total military victory. We knocked out their entire navy, we knocked out their entire air force, we knocked out all of their anti-aircraft weaponry, we knocked out all of their radar, we knocked out all of their leaders, number one, and then we knocked out all of their leaders in the second division, and we knocked out numerous of their leaders in the third division, and they’re very confused.”
In fact, Iran is still firing missiles. Iran has significantly damaged or destroyed several key United States military bases throughout the region. A new, more extreme leader replaced Ayatollah Khamenei. Iran still retains their uranium stockpile. And the Strait of Hormuz remains closed.
“We’ve had a total victory except for people like you that don’t write the truth, you know?” Trump continued. “I actually think it’s sort of treasonous what you write. You and the New York Times, and CNN, I would say, are the worst. You should know better, you know better, you’re a professional. Your editors tell you what to write, and you write it. You should be ashamed of yourselves.”
The fact that Sanger stands there and laughs at the possibility that he could be hanged for treason, and none of the other so-called “journalists” in the room speak up for him, is just as outrageous as Trump’s accusation. They should be pushing back instead of treating it as a joke. It’s NOT a joke. It’s not even the first time Trump has hurled such an accusation at the New York Times.
Trump is literally demanding that the media cover him the way he wants them to cover him or face execution. This is not presidential behavior. It’s not democratic behavior. It’s certainly not constitutional behavior. Trump needs to be removed from office immediately.
