Donald Trump’s return to the United Nations to deliver remarks did not go the way he wanted it to on Tuesday, when the General Assembly stood up and began walking out on him, a humiliating moment for the United States.
Trump’s rambling speech on Tuesday morning included threats to wipe out Iran as his unprovoked war with the Middle Eastern nation drags on and continues to cause skyrocketing prices and shortages around the globe.
But the United Nations General Assembly had had enough when Trump began threatening Cuba as well amid an ongoing embargo that is denying the Cuban people critical medical supplies and food, resulting in many deaths and more to come.
“My administration is also seeking a fundamental change in the situation in Cuba, where the communist regime is under great pressure, the biggest pressure they’ve ever been under,” Trump said. “It’s an absolutely failed state — it’s failing like never before and it will fall. Marco Rubio is handling a negotiation; he’s deep into negotiations with Cuba. Let’s see what happens. We will not allow a haven for foreign adversaries to threaten America on our own doorstep. It’s right at our doorstep.”
As Trump spoke, the members of the General Assembly began to stand up and walk out in protest. Most of the international community has condemned Trump’s actions against Cuba, which does not pose a threat to the United States.
It’s certainly yet another humiliating moment for Trump, since a walk-out by the United Nations General Assembly typically occurs when dictators like Benjamin Netanyahu are addressing the body.
Again, Cuba poses no threat to the United States, and hasn’t for decades. Trump isn’t doing any harm to those in power in Cuba. It’s the Cuban people who are suffering under this cruel policy.
This is a crime against humanity that Trump and his administration should be held accountable for at The Hague.
