Fox News thought they were interviewing someone who would do nothing but spout fawning praise of Donald Trump for their cameras at a rally in South Carolina on Thursday. The network ended up being epically trolled instead, as the attendee compared MAGA to a cult.
The Jonestown Massacre left 909 people dead after the followers of cult leader Jim Jones were tasked with drinking fruit punch laced with deadly poison. This is where “drinking the Kool-Aid” comes from when people describe cults and mindlessly doing whatever the leader tells them to do.
For years, the MAGA movement has been frequently compared to a cult because Trump supporters do whatever Trump tells them to do. They believe whatever he tells them to believe. Facts don’t matter to them. Evidence doesn’t matter. Only what Trump says matters.
On Thursday, just before Trump was set to speak at a rally for acting Senator Darline Graham (R-SC), Fox News asked a man named Tom to talk to them about the rally. And while he disappointed Fox News and MAGA-world, he didn’t disappoint the rest of us.
“Well, in the late ’70s, I was a little too young to get involved and go to South America for the Jonestown massacre, but this is as close as I’ll ever get, so that’s why I’m here,” Tom said in reference to the 1978 mass suicide.
“Wait! The Jonestown massacre?” the Fox reporter exclaimed.
“That’s right. See? It’s nothing like seeing a cult right up front, man,” Tom concluded.
The whole exchange took Fox News completely off guard as Tom mocked all of MAGA as a cult for the whole world to see.
MAGA is a cult, and Trump is the cult leader. The level of devotion to a criminal who absolutely cares nothing about them in return is the exact definition of a cult. Trump is a narcissist. He only cares about himself, and he has spent years enriching himself off the gullibility of his supporters.
His supporters also overwhelmingly depend on many of the very programs that he is trying to destroy, and that’s the Kool-Aid they are drinking right now. It’s not going to kill them and their families right away like the poison at Jonestown did, but they’ll suffer slowly. Only then will they realize they were in a cult all along.
