Senate Republicans began their witch hunt against former special prosecutor Jack Smith with an epically humiliating moment on Tuesday when Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) falsely accused him of committing perjury and presented “evidence” that turned out to be completely misread.
As the midterm elections approach, Senate Republicans decided to stage a show hearing to put Smith on national television to admonish him for leading the investigation into Donald Trump’s various criminal behaviors, including his attempt to overthrow the government in 2020 and stealing classified documents.
Despite the evidence against Trump, the Justice Department under Merrick Garland proved to be too weak to uphold the law and actually prosecute Trump, and the investigations were shut down by Trump and his toadies after he took office again in 2025.
Trump and Republicans have repeatedly tried to characterize Smith as a villain, but without much success. So, of course, they tried again this week with elections just over one month away.
Schmitt smugly began by trying to tie Smith to Fani Willis, the Fulton County district attorney in Georgia, who was pursuing an investigation into Trump’s election interference in the state. He did this by claiming that Smith was in Atlanta at an NBA game.
“Did you go to an NBA game between the Golden State Warriors and the Atlanta Hawks on February 3rd, 2024?” Schmitt asked.
There was, indeed, a game between these two teams that day, an overtime thriller won by the Hawks.
Schmitt even claimed to have text messages from Smith referencing the game, which he had blown up and printed on giant cards.
Smith said he was not in Atlanta, nor did he attend that game.
Schmitt accused Smith of perjury and had the gall to quote Soviet dictator Josef Stalin’s chief of secret police as if that’s supposed to be something special, when all it does is confirm that Republicans love authoritarianism and tyranny.
Anyway, as Schmitt ended his turn in what he thought was a glorious victory, Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) humiliated him by pointing out that Smith was referring to the Iowa State Hawkeyes.
You see, the Iowa State Hawkeyes played against the Maryland Terrapins on the same day, winning the game 93-85. It turns out Smith was in Maryland at that game, not the Atlanta Hawks game. Schmitt literally misread the texts and thought he had Smith nailed to the wall. Oops.
As a former state Attorney General, Schmitt should have known better than to present anything as evidence without taking a close look first. He literally slandered Smith in Congress. Thankfully, Klobuchar was there to put him in his place.
