Donald Trump’s newest tactic to force Republicans to do things his way by publicly revealing their private cell phone numbers may backfire if he tries to use it against Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC), the lawmaker told the hosts of The View on Monday.
Over the weekend, Trump attempted to pressure Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) to support a bill that would make Daylight Saving Time permanent. Cotton opposes the legislation because making Daylight Saving Time permanent doesn’t sit well with parents, whose children would be waiting on buses in the dark.
However, the way Trump tried to force Cotton to do his bidding crossed a line. Trump publicly posted Cotton’s private cell phone number on social media and told his supporters to call him, underscoring the desperate lengths Trump is willing to stoop to get his way.
The outrageous move drew immediate backlash, but Tillis delivered the best reaction on Monday, openly warning Trump on national television that trying the same thing against him would not be wise.
The View co-host Sunny Hostin noted that Tillis has sent warnings to Trump before, although via text messages. Tillis has also been a thorn in Trump’s side. Ana Navarro joked that Trump is going to reveal his number next after the interview airs. Tillis quipped back, “With all due respect, I have his number, too.”
Lawmakers should not have to worry about being doxxed by the White House for simply disagreeing with Trump. It’s a slippery slope that could eventually lead to giving out private addresses, locations of spouses and children, and other sensitive information that could result in tragedy.
Not that Republicans haven’t brought all of this upon themselves by supporting Trump and tolerating his behavior in the first place. But the longer they tolerate it, the more danger they will find themselves in as Trump becomes more and more desperate to get his way at any cost.
