After Donald Trump claimed that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni “begged” him to take a photo with her, Meloni gave him a thrashing in a brutal statement, and the incident also led Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani to cancel an upcoming trip to the United States.
You shouldn’t insult your allies, and you should certainly never lie about them in public, but Trump did both during his appearance at the G7 this week while speaking to La7, an Italian channel.
In his remarks, Trump outrageously claimed that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni “begged” him to take a photo with her. “She’s probably happy I talked to her,” Trump said in addition. “I didn’t have to talk to her. I felt sorry for her.”
The remarks were an instant diplomatic disaster as Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani had been set to visit Washington DC on a diplomatic visit. That will no longer happen as Trump’s remarks were so insulting that Tajani canceled the trip.
But it would be Meloni who would deliver the smackdown that Trump deserves as she called out his lies, according to Reuters.
“Donald Trump’s statements are completely made up,” Meloni said in a statement posted on social media. “I am frankly astonished. I don’t know why the president of the United States behaves like this towards his allies. It is not the first time, moreover.”
“I can only say it is disappointing that he does not show the same determination with the enemies of the West and of the United States, whose leaders he instead treats with far greater indulgence,” she continued. “There is one thing he should remember: neither I nor Italy ever beg.”
It’s about time that someone stood up to Trump this way. None of the so-called “men” in his Cabinet has the balls to do it. None of the so-called “men” in the Republican Party has the balls to do it. So, it had to be a woman. And she deserves praise for punching the bully in the nose.
