Donald Trump’s creation of a $1.8 billion slush fund to pay off his January 6th insurrection thugs effectively led to the budget reconciliation bill being stalled in the Senate as Republicans balk.
The bill, which does not include $1 billion for Trump’s White House ballroom fantasy because the Senate parliamentarian ruled it violates the Byrd Rule, has been a top priority for Senate Republicans as it would fund ICE and Border Patrol after a government shutdown left both agencies begging for cash.
But now, instead of passing the bill before Memorial Day weekend, Senate Republicans are preparing to leave Washington DC without pushing the legislation through. Why? Because of Trump’s $1.8 billion DOJ “weaponization” slush fund.
It appears the reconciliation bill has been delayed due to Senate Republican concerns about the slush fund, which Congress did not authorize.
“Senate GOP leaders have postponed plans to pass a budget reconciliation package designed to fund ICE & CBP because of concerns around the DOJ weaponization fund. This is remarkable given that the weaponization fund was/is not part of the original bill,” NBC News reporter Ryan Nobles wrote on social media.
One Senate Republican even openly voiced his concern that convicted criminals will have access to the money. “Sen John Hoover (R-ND) says the issue of the $1.7 billion Trump fund for convicted criminals has caused trouble for Senate GOP spending bill. Hoeven says colleagues want ‘guardrails,'” MeidasTouch reporter Seth MacFarlane wrote in a post.
The criminals Hoover is referring to are the January 6th insurrectionists who brutally assaulted police officers and damaged property at the Capitol in their attempt to overthrow the government to prevent certification of the 2020 Election results.
Over 1,000 insurrectionists were tried and convicted of various crimes. All have since been pardoned by Trump, and now he wants to pay them off using taxpayer dollars. The pardons are already a miscarriage of justice. Paying them off would add insult to injury.
Donald Trump is using the Treasury as his personal piggy bank to take money for himself, his family, his businesses, and his insurrectionist thugs. Any Republican who aids and abets this brazen theft is just as guilty of treason.
