Powerful Republican Senator Rejects Trump’s Demand To Take Over Elections

In yet another example of his obsession with becoming a dictator, Donald Trump demanded Republicans “nationalize” federal elections in at least 15 states, presumably so he can rig the elections in his favor in the midterms later this year. But it appears Republicans are not all on board, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.).

Republicans are absolutely getting trounced at the ballot box, losing badly to Democrats across the country. Most recently, a Texas Democrat won a landslide victory in a state house district that had voted for Trump by double digits in the 2024 Election.

The Democratic win has sent Republicans into a state of denial and panic as they desperately try to explain how they lost, blaming the weather, while at the same time spending millions more to defend a US Senate seat that is currently up for grabs this year.

As part of the panic, Trump is demanding that Republicans take over elections in several states, which would once again violate the Constitution, something that Trump has done over and over again. Only this time, Republicans appear to be fighting back.

On Tuesday, Thune responded to Trump’s demand by rejecting it.

“I’m supportive of only citizens voting and showing ID at polling places. I think that makes sense,” Thune said, according to The Hill. “But I’m not in favor of federalizing elections, no. I think that’s a constitutional issue. I’m a big believer in decentralized and distributed power. And I think it’s harder to hack 50 election systems than it is to hack one. In my view, at least, that’s always a system that has worked pretty well.”

Indeed, Article I, Section IV, also known as the “Elections Clause” of the Constitution, states, “The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof…” The clause goes on to give Congress a say in the process, but it doesn’t say the federal government can outright seize control of elections.

For now, it seems Republicans are drawing a line, but how long will that last?
