You already have to prove citizenship and show identification to vote, but Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas) is admitting that the GOP’s SAVE Act is about making sure only the “right people” can participate in elections, so Republicans can’t lose.
Voting rights are once again under threat, this time by Donald Trump and a GOP desperate to hold onto absolute power. They are working overtime to rig elections ahead of the 2026 midterms as Democrats are projected to take over control of the House and may have a shot at taking back the Senate as well.
This would effectively end Trump’s presidency because Congress would finally act as a check on the executive branch. But Trump and his supporters continue to scheme to keep themselves in power by pushing redistricting in red states several years before the next census is due at the end of the decade, when redistricting is usually done.
In addition, the six right-wing judges on the Supreme Court recently gutted what was left of the Voting Rights Act, sending Southern states such as Tennessee and Alabama into a rush to eliminate Black voter strength before the ink on the ruling was even dry.
An even worse scheme to rig elections to come is currently stuck in the Senate. Known as the SAVE Act, the bill would force Americans to purchase and present identification, such as a passport, in order to vote. The expense and wait time for a passport alone is outrageous and is basically a poll tax. Millions of women would also be disenfranchised because their married names don’t match their birth certificates.
This is clearly a way for Republicans to select the electorate by preventing women, people of color, and the poor from voting. All three groups overwhelmingly lean Democratic.
Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas), who is a staunch Trump supporter, admitted on Fox Business during an interview that the bill is all about making sure the “right people” vote.
“We want the right people voting,” Williams said.
Republicans are waging war against voting rights because they can’t win unless they cheat. Blue states must fight fire with fire.
