Alabama Republican Demands Supreme Court Overturn 14th Amendment

The Supreme Court does NOT have the power to overturn a constitutional amendment, but Alabama Republicans are demanding it anyway by targeting the 14th Amendment.

As red states across the South move quickly to redraw Congressional districts to wipe out the voting power of Blacks, Latinos, and other ethnic groups, Alabama House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter is now calling on the United States Supreme Court to go beyond gutting the Voting Rights Act by overturning the 14th Amendment.

“I certainly hope the Supreme Court will overturn Amendment 14,” Ledbetter said when asked about a recently passed redistricting bill. “All we need now is the courts to overturn Fourteen, and we can look at the election.”

The 14th Amendment was adopted in 1868. It grants citizenship to “all persons born” in the United States and enshrines equal protection under the law as well as due process. It also superseded the three-fifths rule in the original Constitution.

Clearly, Republicans are not only looking to destroy civil rights and voting rights, but they also want to erase entire parts of the Constitution so they can strip citizenship and treat people of color as lesser than whites.

One would think that the Supreme Court would know better than to try to overturn a constitutional amendment. After all, once an amendment is adopted, it can only be overturned via another constitutional amendment.

For example, the 18th Amendment prohibited the sale and distribution of alcohol starting in 1920. The 21st Amendment overturned it in 1933. But Republicans are drunk with power, and they think the Supreme Court will do whatever they want, even if it’s corrupt.

Our country is not going back to the 1950s. It’s going back to the 1850s. That’s the reality Republicans want. They want to bring back slavery. They want to bar people of color and women from voting. They hate the entire 20th century of legal progress and precedent, and they won’t stop until they’ve eradicated it. Civil war is not on the horizon. It’s already here. And it’s time we started acting like it. Virginia certainly is doing its part.

We are not going to defeat racists with elections, votes, or court decisions. That doesn’t work anymore, not when an entire political party has adopted racism as its platform and has a rigged Supreme Court in its pocket. So we can either lie down and let them turn America into a shithole, or we can do what’s necessary to finally free our nation and our conscience from them once and for all.
