NYC Mayor Mamdani Takes Aim At Trump’s Racist Policies In Patriotic July 4th Address

As Donald Trump continues his anti-immigration agenda as part of his depressing and sparsely attended July 4th events, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani stood inside City Hall and delivered a powerful Independence Day address that puts him to shame.

Ever since Mamdani took office, and even before that, Trump and his MAGA supporters have been attacking him for being a Democratic Socialist. They warn that America is now under siege, when the reality is that Americans in his city are benefiting from Mamdani’s policies. These policies are inclusive and include child care, pre-K services, rent freezes, and a balanced budget paid for by slightly higher taxes on the wealthiest residents.

Mamdani is doing what a great leader should do. He’s taking care of the people in his city. And he’s also standing in direct contrast to Trump, who only cares about himself, his family, and his wealthy friends and donors at the expense of the rest of us.

Immigrants to this country are particularly under siege by Trump, who has built up ICE as his Gestapo to terrorize them across the nation. On Friday, Mamdani delivered a July 4th address reminding New York and all Americans that this country was built by immigrants, not the rich and powerful who have frequently exploited and divided it.

“The story of America has been written by those who have so often been told by those with power and influence and wealth that they were anything but exceptional,” Mamdani said. “For generation after generation, we have been told that when the world has sent its people to our shores, it has not sent its best.”

His words were most certainly aimed at Trump and MAGA.

“America, if you ask them, becomes less the more people it welcomes,” Mamdani continued. “America, they will tell you, belongs only to those with the right accent or the right shade of skin. The rest of us, they insist, should be grateful for merely being allowed to visit. How small they are. How weak, how unoriginal. At every moment in our past, those who led through exclusion and isolation have tried to win power for themselves by turning us against one another.”

Mamdani had a message for Trump and his fellow racists.

“Time and again, including 250 years ago, those forces of division have been vanquished by the forces of progress,” he noted, going on to conclude that it’s not wealthy individuals who shape America.

“Ours is a nation working each day towards the perfection in which it was conceived,” he said. “A nation striving each day to better itself. Therein lies the work of America: The striving, the bettering, the reaching towards perfection. What a privilege each of us has to live in a nation that every one of its inhabitants can shape.”

In short, it’s a team effort. And right now, Trump and MAGA think they are the only Americans in the country. That’s far from the truth. They likely don’t even know how to define true patriotism. They are so nationalistic and racist that they would rather watch the entire country burn down to the ground rather than live in a world where people of color and women have rights.

Trump and his supporters don’t represent the United States. They hate it. They’re working to destroy it from within. Stopping them would be the most patriotic thing the rest of us can do on America’s 250th birthday. It’s time to declare a second Independence Day.
