It’s a fishing expedition designed to distract the American public from the fact that Donald Trump got over one million people killed because of his poor response to the COVID-19 pandemic. And because Dr. Anthony Fauci is refusing to testify, Republican senators are big mad.
Over 1.1 million Americans died because of COVID-19. Rather than take action, Trump spent ten weeks denying the problem and had even dismantled the national pandemic response infrastructure built by former President Barack Obama and top health officials like Dr. Fauci, an immunologist and infectious disease expert.
Eager for a witch hunt, Republicans on the Homeland Security Committee somehow obtained Fauci’s personal diary and published cherry-picked passages before trying to force him to appear at a hearing to answer questions.
The circus began immediately when crackpot Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) ordered security to remove Dr. Fauci’s lawyer from the room just for reminding the panel that his client has the Fifth Amendment right to refuse to answer their questions. Denying Dr. Fauci his legal counsel further delegitimized their inquisition.
Dr. Fauci proceeded to invoke the Fifth Amendment throughout the hearing, though far less than the 440 times Donald Trump invoked it during a deposition in 2022. When Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) took his turn, he accused Dr. Fauci of committing crimes even though Dr. Fauci has never been charged or arrested.
Moreno sank even lower by hurling profanities at Dr. Fauci, who stood his ground with great poise throughout the proceeding.
Dr. Fauci understood perfectly that Republicans have no real evidence to prove their outrageous accusations. They’re just desperate to pin the pandemic on anyone other than Trump, who was president when the pandemic began and could have made quick and early decisions to contain it instead of letting it spread coast to coast in a matter of weeks.
If anything, Dr. Fauci’s decisions saved lives during that time period. More could have been saved had Trump listened to him. Trump has even admitted that he knew about the virus before the first known case in the United States but continued to downplay the threat and ignore it until it was too late.
Only after overwhelming pressure did Trump agree to take action. The United States suffered the most COVID-19 deaths because of Trump’s incompetence. Those deaths are on him, not Dr. Fauci. It should be Trump testifying in this hearing. It should be Trump being accused of criminality. But Republicans aren’t interested in the truth. They only care about staging a performative inquisition less than 100 days before the midterm elections in November to somehow make themselves and Trump look good.
They humiliatingly failed.
