Presidents are temporary residents in the White House, which belongs to the people, not the president. But Donald Trump apparently thinks he owns it because he threw a massive temper tantrum on social media after a court ruling referred to him as a “tenant.”
A federal court ruled this week that construction must stop on Trump’s ballroom. Trump illegally tore down the historic East Wing of the White House, which was built in 1902, so he could install a massive ballroom in its place even though neither the American people nor Congress ever gave him permission to do such a thing.
Indeed, Trump has been treating the White House and surrounding grounds as his own personal property, destroying historic buildings, rooms, outdoor spaces, trees, and anything else he wishes to wreck in favor of his own tacky tastes.
Trump insists the ballroom is necessary for presidential security, but the East Wing already had a ballroom, and the White House is already the most secure place on Earth. The destruction of the East Wing incurred mass outrage, resulting in a lawsuit seeking to halt construction of the ballroom and restore the East Wing.
That lawsuit has now brought Trump’s pet ballroom project to a stop for now. But after learning about the ruling referring to him as a “tenant,” he threw a tantrum.
“Two Judges, one appointed by Barack Hussein Obama, the other by Sleepy Joe Biden, said in a ruling on the desperately needed SECURE Ballroom/Military Complex, including a major DronePort on the roof, that ‘Each President is a temporary tenant…of the White House,'” Trump or his diaper mistress Natalie Harp wrote.
“We are not tenants, who pay rent and do all other things that a tenant must do, we are PRESIDENTS, elected by the people of the United States of America, and have many rights, including the right to fix, renovate, secure, protect, and beautify the White House grounds, which has been built and rebuilt, renovated and rerenovated, repaired and, simply, MADE BETTER, many times since 1792, and never needing the permission of Congress, or anyone else, to do so,” the rant continued.
The president cannot unilaterally decide to destroy White House property and build something else. The White House and the grounds belong to the American people. It belongs to the federal government. Major changes to the residence must go through Congress, which Trump did not do.
Trump does not own the White House. He can make cosmetic changes based on his preferences like every other president has done, but major renovations need approval from Congress, not to mention funding.
This ballroom is not about security. It’s about Trump being desperate for a legacy and a bunker he can lock himself into when he refuses to leave office. He’s destroying history he has no right to destroy. Whether he likes it or not, he’s a temporary resident, and he should be charged with vandalism for what he’s done to Washington DC.
