Donald Trump “honored” America’s veterans during a Veterans’ Day speech on Tuesday by glorifying war, patting his Cabinet goons on the back, and praising Russia.
During Trump’s first term in office, he insulted fallen World War I soldiers as “suckers” and “losers,” marking one of countless incidents in which he has disgraced the men and women in uniform who have fought and died for our country.
On Tuesday, during a Veterans’ Day ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, Trump once again insulted our troops while desecrating hallowed ground in a rambling speech in which he glorified war, praised Russia, and bragged about his suck-up Cabinet members.
“I want to thank [Veterans Administration] Secretary Doug Collins, who’s outstanding, just done a fantastic job for the veterans,” Trump crowed. “We have a 92 percent approval rating. We took that up from 38 percent from a certain previous administration that we won’t mention. Also, Secretary of War, we like the sound of that better than the other way, Secretary Pete Hegseth. Pete, thank you very much. Thank you Pete.”
Trump’s “approval rating” among veterans is actually the trust veterans have in receiving healthcare from Veterans Affairs. According to the Military Times, those scores have only been tracked for a short time going back to the last year of the Biden Administration. Furthermore, trust in the agency never dropped to the figures Trump claimed it did under Biden. In fact, 90.4 percent of veterans expressed trust in their VA healthcare in March 2023, and that figure has only steadily risen ever since, regardless of the White House occupant. In short, Trump had nothing to do with it.
As Trump continued desecrating Veterans’ Day, he praised Russia and once again voiced his obsession with renaming Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day.
“As you know today is not only Veterans Day, but it’s my proclamation that we are now going to be saying and calling Victory Day for World War I,” Trump said. “I saw France was celebrating another Victory Day for World War II, and other countries were celebrating. They were all celebrating. We’re the one that won the wars… I watched it. I watched UK. I watched Russia. They were celebrating Victory Day World War II, and I said ‘we got to have a Victory Day.’ Nobody even talked about it in our country. From now on we’re going to be celebrating Victory Day for World War I, for World War II and frankly for everything else.”
Here’s the video via YouTube:
In the United States, we already observe holidays marking the end of the European and Pacific theaters of World War II. Neither of those days occurs on Veterans’ Day or Memorial Day. Victory Day in European nations also does not occur on Veterans’ Day. November 11th is referred to as Remembrance Day or Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I. The United States designated Memorial Day to honor our fallen soldiers, while Veterans’ Day honors veterans who are still living.
Our country does not glorify war, and nor should we. Trump’s speech only serves as yet another reason why he does not belong in the White House and should not be the Commander-in-Chief.
