Donald Trump outright insulted our allies during a Fox News interview by claiming we “didn’t need them” in Afghanistan following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Now, NATO veterans are rebuking him in response.
Shortly after delivering yet another humiliating speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos and going on to claim that “sometimes, we need a dictator,” Trump went on Fox News to belittle our NATO allies.
“I’ve always said, ‘Will they be there, if we ever needed them?’ And that’s really the ultimate test,” Trump said. And I’m not sure of that. I know that we would have been there, or we would be there, but will they be there? We’ve never needed them. We have never really asked anything of them. You know, they’ll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan, or this or that. And they did – they stayed a little back, a little off the front lines.”
That’s not true. Our NATO allies jumped to help us fight terrorism in Afghanistan shortly after the 9/11 attacks, just as NATO is supposed to work. An attack on one is an attack on all. Troops from the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Poland, Turkey, Italy, Canada, the Netherlands, Denmark, Spain, the Czech Republic, and Romania served alongside American soldiers in Afghanistan between 2001 and 2021.
As you may also recall, it was Donald Trump who handed Afghanistan back to Taliban forces after releasing their leaders and thousands of their followers during his first term, undoing over two decades of work to stabilize the country.
NATO troops numbered in the thousands. Hundreds were killed in action. Thousands were wounded. That doesn’t sound like they stayed off the front lines. Quite the opposite. They fought and died together with their American allies.
NATO leaders, veterans, and other social media users fired back at Trump.
Trump is a menace. He’s a threat to world peace. He’s a threat to our national security. It’s time to remove him by whatever means necessary. Because while we need NATO, we certainly don’t need Trump.
