Donald Trump is blocking funding to blue states in revenge for not voting for him in 2024, which his own administration’s lawyers for the Department of Energy openly admitted in court.
It’s already known that Trump is obsessed with using his second term to get revenge against his political opponents. From filing lawsuits against media organizations to trying to prosecute Democrats, Trump has spearheaded a retaliation campaign unlike anything seen in American history. The pettiness is simply off the charts.
And his administration isn’t even denying it anymore. According to the New York Times, Trump administration attorneys from the Department of Energy admitted in court that funding for a variety of programs is being denied to states that are represented by Democrats or did not vote for Trump in 2024. In short, he’s punishing blue states by blocking money approved for disbursement by Congress for entirely political reasons.
In little-noticed court documents, federal officials acknowledged this month that they had terminated the funding “based solely” on political criteria, targeting projects in states that were represented by Democrats and had voted for Kamala Harris, the party’s presidential nominee, in the 2024 election,” the New York Times reported.
“The admission showed how President Trump has weaponized the provision of federal education, energy, health, housing and infrastructure aid in his second term,” the report continued. “Far from rooting out the sort of misspending that Mr. Trump sees as rife in Washington, the White House has instead sought to leverage the budget as a tool to assist its allies — or as a cudgel to hurt the president’s foes.”
Indeed, Trump has even denied disaster aid to blue states while greenlighting aid to red states.
While Trump supporters are cheering on these actions, they should keep in mind that the next Democratic president can turn around and do the same to red states, which rely more heavily on federal dollars than blue states do. Frankly, this needs to happen so red states can learn why it’s completely inappropriate for a president to deny funding for political revenge.
Failing to teach red states this lesson only shows them that there are no consequences for these types of actions, which they will then repeat if another Republican is elected to the presidency. Preventing this type of behavior means punishing red states for what Trump is doing. No mercy. They don’t deserve it. Payback is a bi*tch.
