In yet another stunning, yet predictable display of hypocrisy on Thursday, Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) attacked Dr. Anthony Fauci by accusing him of doing what Donald Trump has been openly doing since becoming president.
Dr.Fauci repeatedly invoked his Fifth Amendment right to remain silent in the face of a Republican inquisition designed to entrap him. Republicans were furious that Dr. Fauci saw through their scheme and are threatening to vote to hold him in contempt, a charge that likely won’t stick.
Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) even dropped profanities during the hearing and accused Dr. Fauci of committing crimes despite having no evidence to prove such claims. On Thursday, Hawley repeated the accusations and then some.
“He took the Fifth,” Hawley complained on Fox News before calling Dr. Fauci a “scam artist” and accusing him of enriching himself off the federal government. “This guy is going to be the biggest scam artist ever. He got rich. Fauci was getting rich. A million dollars that guy got using the federal government. I hope DOJ will prosecute him for it.”
Republicans are literally slandering Dr. Fauci, the medical hero who tirelessly worked in public health for more than 50 years to protect Americans. Without him, the COVID-19 pandemic would have been even worse than the 1.2 million American deaths that Trump caused by downplaying the virus instead of taking it seriously.
As usual, Hawley is accusing Dr. Fauci of that which Trump is guilty. Trump is a scam artist. Trump is profiting off the presidency and has likely stolen billions of dollars to enrich himself and his family. Trump has committed multiple crimes while in office. Every accusation is a confession. We’re seeing it in real time as Republicans desperately try to frame Dr. Fauci for the pandemic and anything else they can think of to shift the focus away from Trump.
Hawley, who literally ran for his life on January 6, 2021, when Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, doesn’t have half the courage and intelligence that Dr. Fauci possesses. Like most other Republicans, Hawley is a willing pawn for a cult leader who would rather watch Americans suffer than lift a finger to help them.
