It is entirely unethical for the Attorney General and the Department of Justice to act as the personal legal team of anyone in the White House, including the president. But that’s exactly what corrupt Attorney General Todd Blanche says is going to happen for Donald Trump’s new chief of staff, Stephen Miller.
After scoring a massive Election Day sweep across the nation on Tuesday, Democrats will control the House and Senate by wide margins when the new Congress begins in January. Democrats are already primed to investigate the Trump administration and hold them accountable.
This includes Stephen Miller, who is the architect of many of the actions Trump has taken over the last two years. Almost immediately after Trump announced that Miller would be his new chief of staff, Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) told Miller that he had better “lawyer up” because the House Oversight Committee is coming for him.
“Just days after the American people rejected his corrupt and lawless presidency, Donald Trump is doubling down,” Garcia said in a statement. “Stephen Miller is the architect of the unconstitutional ICE raids that have terrorized our communities and kidnapped and killed American citizens and immigrant families. Donald Trump’s appointment of Stephen Miller to a senior White House role signals a continuation of hardline immigration policies that have deeply impacted immigrant communities across the country.”
“Oversight Democrats will continue to closely monitor and investigate policy implementations to ensure compliance with constitutional standards, and we will oppose measures that harm families and communities,” Garcia continued. “The administration will be held accountable for its policy choices. Stephen Miller should lawyer up.”
Traditionally, this should mean Miller will have to obtain an attorney for himself at his own expense. That’s because the Department of Justice is supposed to maintain independence. It’s also because taxpayer dollars shouldn’t be used by the Department of Justice or the White House to act as the personal lawyers for administration officials.
But Todd Blanche is already disregarding those ethical obligations by announcing that he and the DOJ will be Miller’s lawyers. Miller won’t have to pay a dime because the tab will be picked up by taxpayers.
“The Chief of Staff already has a lawyer,” Blanche wrote on social media. “The Attorney General of the United States and the Department of Justice.”
The DOJ should not be used as Stephen Miller’s personal law firm. It’s a waste of taxpayer dollars. It destroys the independence of the DOJ and is totally unethical. Todd Blanche should be impeached.
