Donald Trump threw another temper tantrum directed at the Supreme Court over birthright citizenship on Wednesday and admitted that he’s committing a crime by selling citizenship. Oops.
The high court upheld birthright citizenship as guaranteed by the 14th Amendment in a ruling that immediately drew an angry social media rant from Trump, whose attacks against birthright citizenship have been a central part of his anti-immigration agenda.
On Wednesday, Trump continued attacking the Supreme Court by making wild claims about what’s going on at the border with Mexico since the ruling, and demanded the court rehear the case and reverse the ruling, something that has only been done once in American history.
“Signs and Billboards are being put up all over our Southern Border, and Mexico, advertising BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP, with ‘Deliveries starting at $4000,'” Trump wrote. “AMERICAN CITIZENSHIP IS NOT FOR SALE! In fact, that is a crime, and therefore, the Supreme Court’s ruling is wrong. I will be asking for a Rehearing by the United States Supreme Court, IMMEDIATELY. This miscarriage of justice will destroy America if they don’t change their absolutely insane decision.”
The Supreme Court is unlikely to rehear this case, much less reverse the ruling. The ruling was a 6-3 decision. Two Justices would have to switch sides, and that is highly unlikely given that Chief Justice John Roberts wrote a strong decision for the majority.
But what’s most interesting is that Trump made an inadvertent admission while raging against the Supreme Court. He wrote that selling citizenship is a crime. As you may recall, Trump commissioned the creation of the Trump Gold Card that does exactly that.
For the low, low price of $1 million, a prospective migrant to the United States can literally buy their way into the country and be well on their way to becoming a citizen. It’s basically the same thing. Trump can’t accuse someone of selling American citizenship while literally selling a pathway to citizenship for $1 million a pop.
Like he said. It’s a crime. Lock him up.
