Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch made it abundantly clear to Christian Nationalists during a PBS interview over the weekend that the United States was absolutely NOT founded as a Christian nation.
Christian Nationalists are currently trying to destroy the separation of church and state so they can establish religious law across the land because they stupidly believe that the Founding Fathers intended for the country to be a Christian nation.
However, we know this to be fundamentally false, as our own Constitution forbids the government from creating an establishment of religion. Furthermore, the founding generation was made up of multiple religious beliefs. Even our most notable founders and first presidents made it clear that a cornerstone of our nation is the separation of church and state.
The Treaty of Tripoli of 1797, ratified by the United States Senate and signed by President John Adams, plainly states that “the Government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion.”
History and the words of our Founding Fathers and founding documents aren’t stopping Christian Nationalists from pursuing their extremist agenda. But supporters of separation of church and state have just gained an unlikely new ally in Justice Neil Gorsuch, whom Donald Trump nominated to the high court in 2017.
During an interview with Margaret Hoover on PBS, Gorsuch laid waste to the Christian Nationalist claim that America was founded as a Christian nation.
“We were founded, a lot of our colonies, for religious pluralism, right? And the opportunity to practice your own faith in your own way,” Gorsuch said. “And we were never supposed to be a nation that was about one race or one religion. It was about those ideas. And those things are perfect ideas that speak to every human heart and that unite us all.“
“I mean, it’s demonstrably not true that we came from the same religion,” Gorsuch continued. “I mean, we have a First Amendment, for crying out loud. No established religion. Everybody has a freedom of religion. Everybody has the freedom of speech. We are all equal under law, okay?”
Several of the Founding Fathers weren’t even Christians themselves. They were deists. Some were Quakers. Some were Amish. The bottom line is that they believed in a secular government and a nation of religious freedom, not just Christianity but all religions.
Now MAGA can throw another temper tantrum because this is something else they’re not right about.
