A bombshell report alleging that Donald Trump threatened to attack the Vatican if Pope Leo did not get on board with his corrupt use of military power has led to calls for the Pontiff to excommunicate JD Vance.
It unfolded on Wednesday when independent journalist Christopher Hale posted confirmation of a report that Trump’s Pentagon officials threatened Pope Leo and the Vatican for taking a stand against Trump’s use of military force.
“America has the military power to do whatever it wants in the world,” the Pentagon officials allegedly told the Vatican. “The Catholic Church had better take its side.”
This apparently was taken seriously enough that the Pope’s visit to the United States later this year has been cancelled out of concern for his safety.
In response to the explosive report, JD Vance, a Catholic, appeared to question it while claiming he would investigate. “I would actually like to talk to Cardinal Cristophe Pierre and, frankly, to our people, to figure out what actually happened,” Vance said, according to Newsweek. “I think it’s always a bad idea to offer an opinion on stories that are unconfirmed and uncorroborated, so I’m not going to do that.”
Now Pope Leo has a new decision to make because calls are mounting to excommunicate Vance, seeing as how he’s complicit with Trump’s violent agenda.
It’s unlikely that Pope Leo will excommunicate JD Vance, but if the Catholic Church wants to recoup any moral authority it has lost, he may want to seriously consider it. Several Republicans in every branch of our government are Catholics. The church should certainly hold them all accountable for supporting Trump and his vile, inhumane policies.
This is a moment for the Catholic Church to exercise moral accountability as legal accountability continues to be ignored. It may be nothing more than symbolic, but it could be powerful nonetheless.
