As Donald Trump’s unprovoked war with Iran takes the lives of more American troops, a House Republican callously brushed off the casualties during an interview on CNN.
At least three more American soldiers were killed recently by Iranian missile strikes against a military base in Jordan, with hundreds more injured. That brings the death toll to 17 despite Trump repeatedly declaring victory over Iran and claiming that his war would only last a brief time. Trump even surrendered by signing a deal with Iran that would give them hundreds of billions of dollars, yet that didn’t last either.
Meanwhile, Trump and his family are directly profiting from the war, and the economy is flailing. Inflation is up. Gas prices are high. Groceries are more expensive.
Now, more American troops have paid the price for Trump’s incompetence and corruption. And House Republicans couldn’t care less because Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-Fla.) went on CNN to shrug off the tragedy as just a part of war.
“My condolences go out to the families of our servicemen and women that are killed,” Gimenez said. “That is the nature of warfare. We will have some casualties.”
Gimenez went on to add further insult to injury by arguing that Gold Star families should be comforted that the death toll isn’t higher. Seriously.
It’s true that signing up for the military carries a risk of potentially having to fight and die. But Americans sign up to serve, and they want their service and sacrifice to mean something. They want to make a difference. Dying in an illegal war started by a president who lied about the reasons for that war makes their sacrifice for nothing.
These soldiers did not die for freedom. They died because Donald Trump needs a distraction so he can continue covering up the Epstein files. They died so Trump can game the stock market. Their deaths are tragic. Their families should not be torn apart. These soldiers would still be alive if Trump had not started an unprovoked war. Gimenez should be upset about that, but he isn’t, and that’s a problem because it means Republicans don’t value the lives of our troops.
