Washington, DC
A federal judge has ruled that Donald Trump must remove his name from the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts and barred him from closing it down for what were sure to be disgraceful “renovations.” Now, Trump is demanding criminal charges against the judge.
In a ruling on Friday, US District Judge Casey Cooper ordered Trump to remove his name from the Kennedy Center, which is a memorial to slain former President John F. Kennedy. It’s the cultural center of the national capital and has stood as an iconic DC venue for decades. That is, until Trump desecrated it by adding his name to it.
“The Kennedy Center’s organic statute makes crystal clear that the Center is to be named for President Kennedy, and it cannot bear any other formal name or public memorial based on the Board’s unilateral say-so. Congress gave the Kennedy Center its name, and only Congress can change it,” Judge Cooper wrote.
In response, Trump raged on his social media platform in a childish diatribe, claiming that the courts are being mean and unfair to him. He would go even further on Saturday by demanding criminal charges against Cooper for not letting him have his way.
As usual, Trump made it personal by attacking Cooper’s wife, a former Justice Department prosecutor during the Clinton Administration who has also represented former President Joe Biden. Trump claims it’s a “conflict of interest.”
“Amy is totally wired into the Left System, from her husband down, and it is impossible for me to be treated fairly,” Trump wrote. “He has a total Conflict of Interest, and should be brought up on charges for not revealing these facts. That is why The Kennedy Center will soon be closed, probably never to open again.”
There is no conflict of interest here. A lawyer can represent a Democrat and still be a Republican. It happens all the time. If Trump really cared about judges having conflicts of interest, he would be demanding criminal charges against all six conservative justices on the Supreme Court, who have time and time again failed to disclose such conflicts while also refusing to recuse themselves from the cases.
Judge Cooper’s ruling is correct. Congress passed legislation giving the Kennedy Center its name. Only Congress can change it. And it shouldn’t change it anyway because it’s a memorial to former President John F. Kennedy. Changing it would be the equivalent of spitting on someone’s grave. The only one who deserves that kind of treatment is Trump.
