Donald Trump continues to deface national monuments and institutions, this time adding his name to the Kennedy Center, enraging Americans across the nation.
The United States named the National Cultural Center after President John F. Kennedy in 1964, the year after his assassination. It has been known as the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts ever since, a tribute to a man who served our country, inspired it, and truly appreciated the arts. Donald Trump is none of those things. Yet, the Kennedy Center board, which he had stuffed with lackeys, voted to add his name in front of Kennedy’s.
Federal law designates the center as the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts, so this defacing is NOT legal. It’s beyond disgraceful, and follows Trump’s other attempts to erase the Kennedy legacy, which includes bulldozing the Jaqueline Kennedy Rose Garden on the White House grounds and paving over it to install an ugly patio.
Following the announcement, Americans, including members of the Kennedy family, took to social media to rip Trump apart:
The Kennedy Center isn’t just a place; it’s a living memorial dedicated to a former president who was slain in the service of his country. Donald Trump doesn’t care one iota about the arts. He only cares about his overinflated ego. Trump and his cronies have no right to deface the Kennedy Center. They have no legal right to do it either. This is the equivalent of stepping on someone’s grave, and there should be hell to pay for it. Enough is enough.
