As Trump nominees continue to evade questions posed by Democrats about the January 6th insurrection and the 2020 Election results, Senator Eric Schmidt (R-Mo.) is now throwing a snowflake hissy fit about it.
Donald Trump soundly lost the 2020 Election and lost 60+ court cases alleging election fraud because his lawyers failed to produce a single shred of evidence to support his false claims. Rather than accept the loss and go home, Trump attempted to overthrow the government to stay in power by sending thousands of his supporters to Congress to stop the certification of the election results.
His supporters broke through windows and violently attacked police officers to make their way inside the Capitol building, where they destroyed property, committed theft, and came armed and ready to kidnap or kill lawmakers so Trump could get his way. This unfolded throughout the day as Trump watched on a television screen with glee.
It’s one of the most infamous days in American history, and Trump has yet to answer for it. What he has done is pardon every single participant for their crimes as part of an orchestrated scheme to downplay the insurrection attempt.
Republicans have been culpable in the cover-up effort, refusing to comply with subpoenas and repeating Trump’s lies about that day and the 2020 Election. But Democrats aren’t letting them get away with it, which is why they have been repeatedly asking Trump nominees about both.
Alarmingly, these nominees have repeatedly refused to answer the questions. A simple question of who won the 2020 Election, the answer being former President Joe Biden, ends up being met with awkward evasion or an attempt to baffle Senate committees with bullsh*t.
Of course, the questions are triggering Republicans. Schmidt, who wasn’t even there that day because he was only elected to the Senate in 2022, had the nerve to complain about it during a hearing on Thursday, according to the Huffington Post.
“I think that we ought to change the date of Groundhog Day to January 6, because every time I walk into this committee hearing – it’s everything,” Schmidt whined. “Everything stops and starts with January 6.”
Schmidt wasn’t there on January 6, 2021, when the Trump mob stormed the Capitol. The insurrectionists even brought a gallows to hang former Vice President Mike Pence for refusing to challenge the election results. The insurrectionists brought weapons with them. They brought zip-ties. They assaulted police officers.
Even Republican lawmakers evacuated or took cover that day as the insurrectionists attempted to break down the doors to enter the House chamber, forcing Capitol Police to use lethal force. This was no “tour.”
It was an attempted coup to keep Trump in power. His nominees should have to answer questions about it. And they should not be confirmed if they can’t or won’t answer truthfully.
