Despite voting overwhelmingly for Donald Trump in 2016 and again in 2020 and 2024, farmers across the country have been wiped out because of Trump’s policies. And that’s why Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.) took Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins to the woodshed.
Trump’s policies have devastated farmers over the last year and a half. His obsession with tariffs cost American farmers big business with China, as Chinese leaders chose to sign trade deals elsewhere. His unprovoked war with Iran has driven the cost of oil, gas, and fertilizer to record highs, pricing farmers out.
Farm bankruptcies jumped 46 percent in 2025, and appear poised to continue increasing in 2026. It’s a disaster for farmers and their families, many of whom have been farming their lands for generations. It’s also a disaster for the American people, who now must suffer higher prices and potential food shortages.
But while Trump and his sycophants deny the direness of the situation, House Democrats put the spotlight on it in Congress during a hearing on Thursday.
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins doesn’t care about the reality of the struggles farmers are experiencing right now because of her boss. She just rolls out the new policies he tells her to and lies about the devastating impact of them.
During the House Agriculture Committee hearing, Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.) had strong words and indisputable facts for Rollins, who had to be told to shut her mouth because she wouldn’t stop interrupting.
“Reclaiming my time means you stop talking,” Craig said. “That’s what it means in this building.”
Craig noted that 15,000 farms were lost in 2025, according to data released by the USDA, which Rollins oversees. Of course, that didn’t stop Rollins from attempting to dispute the numbers, only for Craig to fire back.
“If this administration didn’t have terrible policies, we would not need all that support for family farmers because we would have export markets still left in China,” Craig said.
Craig went on to pepper Rollins with additional facts about the plight of American farmers, with Rollins objecting every step of the way, despite those facts coming directly from USDA and Farm Bureau resources. Rollins even invoked Trump’s favorite scapegoat, former President Joe Biden. Craig forcefully shut her down.
“Joe Biden is no longer the president. Mr. Trump is. Your party controls Congress. You own these numbers at this point,” Craig said. “I’m sick of hearing you blame an administration from a year and half ago. You own every single bit of this.”
“When you describe the farm economy as the ‘golden age,’ this administration needs to wake up and start understanding that family farmers are in need,” Craig concluded.
