As Donald Trump walked out of Irish President Catherine Connolly’s official residence after a private meeting, he had a noticeably defeated look on his face, similar to the one he had after meeting with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in Helsinki back in 2018. Unlike the 2018 meeting, we know why Trump had the look on his face this time.
Few leaders have had the spine to stand up to Trump despite his constant bullying and insults. Connolly proved to be one of the few on Saturday when she faced off with Trump in a private meeting and threw the book at him over the genocide Israel is committing against the Palestinians in Gaza.
“I conveyed the strong view of the Irish people that the normalisation of war and genocide can never be accepted,” Connolly told reporters of her remarks to Trump. “As a country which has suffered famine, colonisation and the violence of the Troubles, but also the importance of the long and challenging road to peace, I emphasised the unique insight which Irish people can bring to the resolution of conflict.”
Not long after the meeting concluded, Trump was seen walking out of the residence in front of Connelly with a defeated look on his face, the look of a bully who just got punched in the nose. This is likely not how Trump expected the meeting to go. It’s especially notable because Trump was taken to the woodshed by a woman.
Trump has frequently treated women horribly as president, often talking down to them, threatening them, and trying to intimidate them. But Connolly is not a reporter or a staffer. She’s a woman in power, something Trump clearly can’t handle.
The confrontation adds a little more context to Trump’s attempt to cause chaos during his trip, when he told the press in Dublin that he wants Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to reunite after having been separate for over 100 years.
That didn’t go over very well either, as Northern Ireland leaders quickly shut him down by pointing out that reunification can only occur with the consent of the people through a referendum.
Once again, Trump suffered humiliation on the world stage, and the pictures alone tell the story. Connolly’s confirmation is just icing on the cake.
