Mexican authorities shot and killed a cartel leader on Sunday, and Trump cultist Laura Loomer was quick to use the news to spread misinformation and fear, leading to the Mexican Embassy calling her out.
In an effort to capture Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, “El Mencho,” the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, the Mexican army took the lead with aid from American intelligence. However, Cervantes was killed rather than captured. In retaliation, members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel went about committing acts of violence and arson, including setting fire to gas stations.
Of course, Loomer not only tried to credit the US military for eliminating Cervantes, but she also spread fear by claiming that the cartel members were retaliating by taking American tourists hostage. It’s a claim that poses a danger because it can cause panic. And panic can result in tragedy.
While the Mexican Embassy should not have to respond to the ravings of a MAGA crackpot who spouts hate and conspiracy theories, it directly called out Loomer on social media.
“This post is false,” the Mexican Embassy stated. “The military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, aimed at capturing Rubén ‘N,’ alias ‘Mencho,’ was planned and executed by Mexican Special Forces. The action was carried out within the framework of bilateral cooperation, with U.S. authorities providing complementary intelligence. Mexican National Guard and Army troops are currently reinforcing security in Jalisco and neighboring states to maintain order.”
Again, the United States military did not eliminate Cervantes. The Mexican military did. Loomer’s effort to credit the US military is clearly a veiled attempt to credit Donald Trump, who deserves none of it.
And deliberately trying to start a panic among American tourists at a time when Mexican authorities are trying to restore order should, frankly, be classified as cyber terrorism.
