A Republican mayor in the red state of Kansas faces prison time, financial penalties, and possible deportation after being slapped with voter fraud charges.
Coldwater Mayor Joe Ceballos has lived in the United States since he was a toddler, and he’s been voting in American elections since 1991. The problem is that he came over with his parents from Mexico and has not been able to legally vote. According to Ceballos, he’s even a typically uninformed voter since all he does is vote for the candidates on the ballot that feature an “R” next to their names, including Donald Trump and Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach.
The plot twist is that it’s Kobach who is charging Ceballos with voter fraud. Ceballos only applied for citizenship this year, so he’s been voting illegally for over 30 years, even becoming the mayor of his small town. Now he faces up to 68 months in prison and $200,000 in fines.
But that’s not all. The Department of Homeland Security is also getting involved, crowing about nabbing a non-citizen voter and threatening to deport him to Mexico.
“This alien committed a felony by voting in American elections. If convicted, he will be placed in removal proceedings. President Trump and Secretary Noem gave states access to the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program to ensure only Americans vote in American elections,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, according to a DHS press release. “The SAVE program is a critical tool for state and local governments to safeguard the integrity of elections across the country. Our elections belong to American citizens, not foreign citizens.”
Again, it must be pointed out that as much as Republicans scream bloody murder about voter fraud, it’s one of their own voters who committed it. It also goes to show that Trump and the GOP have no problem stabbing Latinos who voted for them in the back.
As much as Ceballos deserves sympathy, it’s difficult to do so when he literally voted for his own deportation. This scenario is currently being played out across the nation as Latinos and other ethnic groups who voted for Trump and the GOP get caught in the anti-immigrant fervor that Republicans have unleashed upon the country.
While Ceballos committed felonies, many of the people being kidnapped by ICE have no criminal records. Voters like Ceballos not only did this to themselves, but they also did it to others, too. Next time you step into a voting booth, consider the consequences for others instead of only yourself.
