Donald Trump punished certain GOP senators for not being 100 percent loyal. Now those senators are poised to wreck his legislative agenda for the remainder of their terms. Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) is one of them.
Up to now, the Republican-controlled chamber had been perfectly willing to do Trump’s bidding. But a shift occurred after Trump sought to punish Cornyn and Senator Bill Cassidy (R-La.) for not automatically being a rubber-stamp vote for his policies and nominees.
As a result of Trump’s thirst for revenge, both Cornyn and Cassidy lost their primary races, meaning they are not the Republican nominees in the midterm election this November. They are being replaced by more obsessively MAGA candidates who have no problem kissing Trump’s ass daily while casting the votes he tells them to cast in the Senate.
The problem Trump created for himself, however, is that Cornyn and Cassidy have nothing to lose and can derail Trump’s legislative agenda at will. And since Republicans only have a razor-thin majority in the Senate, losing these two votes could be costly, especially in committee votes to move nominees and legislative proposals to full votes.
At a time when Trump is desperate to pass voter suppression bills such as the SAVE Act and a National Defense Authorization Act renewal that would merge the US and Israeli militaries, Cornyn and Cassidy are crucial votes he can’t afford to lose.
Cornyn certainly understands the power he holds, which is why he plans to use it. “They’re not enthusiastic about it, but if they want to get [Attorney General nominee Todd Blanche] out of the committee, I think they realize they need to talk to us,” Cornyn recently said in a statement.
The Texas Republican said he intends to exercise his “newfound political freedom” to make Trump’s life a living hell for the remainder of his time in the Senate. “You ain’t seen nothing yet,” Cornyn promised.
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) is already making waves in the House. Cornyn and Cassidy are seemingly joining his cause in the Senate. Trump took petty revenge against them for not agreeing with him on everything. Now they get to take revenge against Trump by wrecking his legislative agenda.
