As corporations prepare to file requests for refunds of the $160 billion in tariffs that Donald Trump illegally imposed on them as part of his damaging trade wars, he is now apparently offering favors to those who decline a tariff refund.
The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that Trump’s tariffs were unconstitutional because the legislative branch has that power, not the executive. Of course, Trump has been throwing a temper tantrum about the ruling ever since, even going so far as to ignore it by issuing additional tariffs.
The tariffs did nothing positive for the United States, as it was American companies paying them instead of foreign competitors. Or, to be more precise, American companies were passing the cost of tariffs onto consumers by raising prices. However, while American corporations can seek and receive refunds, consumers cannot, which is fundamentally unfair.
On Tuesday, Trump spoke with CNBC by phone about reports that some companies, such as Amazon, will not be seeking refunds. In response, Trump appeared to offer favors to companies that decline refunds.
“I think it’s brilliant if they don’t do that,” Trump said. “Actually, if they don’t do that, they’ve got to know me very well. I’m very honored by what you just said. If they don’t do that, I’ll remember them.”
Clearly, this is a bribe offer. Let me keep the cash, and I’ll do you a favor down the line. That’s what Trump is saying. He also whined about the Supreme Court decision again.
“Because of what they did, we have to pay back $160 billion,” Trump said. “All they had to do is add one sentence, just one sentence, and that’s, ‘You don’t have to pay anything taken in thus far, back.’ So, I’m not happy with the Supreme Court. I’ll be honest with you.”
Again, Trump’s tariffs were illegal. So any money taken in by the federal government should be refunded. It’s a Trump grift that failed. And his offer to do favors for companies for declining a refund is a crime.
