Trump Makes Medal Of Honor Ceremony About Himself Instead Of Veteran Who Earned It

Rather than let a Korean War veteran have the spotlight while receiving a long-overdue Medal of Honor, Donald Trump made the moment about himself during the State of the Union Address on Tuesday night.

The inappropriate selfishness came when 100-year-old retired Navy Captain E. Royce Williams was finally awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Korean War. The ceremony was already somewhat marred by the fact that they are usually held at the White House in more low-key moments instead of a political moment such as the State of the Union Address.

It was also odd because the President of the United States typically confers the award to the recipient. This time, it was part-time First Lady Melania Trump. But after Melania presented the award to Captain Williams, Donald Trump ruined the moment by making it all about himself and how he supposedly deserves his own Medal of Honor. Seriously.

“I’ve always wanted the Congressional Medal of Honor, but I was informed I’m not allowed to give it to myself, and I wouldn’t know why I’d be taking it, but if they ever open up that law, I will be there with you someday,” Trump said.

This isn’t the first time Trump has mused about getting a Medal of Honor. In fact, he did it earlier this month.

“I decided to go to Iraq. I was extremely brave. So brave in fact that I wanted to give myself the Congressional Medal of Honor,” Trump said. “I said to my people, ‘Am I allowed to give myself the Congressional Medal of Honor?’”

Trump’s remarks about giving himself the Medal of Honor desecrate the award. It’s a slap in the face to all who serve and those who have put their lives on the line. Trump has never served. He’s a five-time draft dodger who has referred to those killed in the line of duty as “suckers” and “losers.” He’s a coward, not a hero.

His trip to Iraq posed no risk to himself. He flew there in the most secure and protected aircraft in the world and had an entourage of military and Secret Service at a secure airbase. His words about the Medal of Honor cheapen it and alone should anger Americans enough to force him out of office.

This should have been a moment for Captain Williams. Instead, Trump turned it into nothing more than a cheap show so he could promote himself for the award. Sickening.
