The Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest award for distinguished acts of valor by a member of the United States military, and Donald Trump wants to bring shame to it by giving it to himself.
During Trump’s first stint in office back in 2018, he traveled to Iraq under heavy guard by the military and the Secret Service to visit troops stationed in the country, as had prior Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
Unlike Bush and Obama, however, Trump thinks he deserves a Medal of Honor for taking the trip, which he told an audience in Georgia on Thursday.
“I decided to go to Iraq. I was extremely brave. So brave in fact that I wanted to give myself the Congressional Medal of Honor,” Trump said at a rally that was supposed to be about the economy.
“I said to my people, am I allowed to give myself the Congressional Medal of Honor?” he continued. “And you know, I’ve given out so many to guys that are seriously brave. I mean, they come in, and their arms are missing, their legs are missing. Their stories are so unbelievable. And I said that’s a little stretch if I gave myself one.”
Yeah, it’s doubtful Trump considered that it would be a “stretch.” This is a guy who has literally referred to dead American soldiers as “suckers and losers.” He has never thought about anyone other than himself. Trump then went on to say that he intends to try awarding the Medal of Honor to himself “someday” and that he’s going to “test the law.”
Just like he doesn’t deserve the Nobel Peace Prize, Trump absolutely does not deserve the Medal of Honor. It would cheapen the honor and turn it into a joke. This is the exact kind of thing that dictators do, and the American people should be outraged, along with anyone who wore or currently wears the uniform.
Trump flew to Iraq on Air Force One, the most protected aircraft on the planet. This trip occurred under the strictest secrecy, and Trump had an entourage of security the entire time. At no point was he “brave” or under fire, just like he was never brave or under fire during the Vietnam War because he dodged the draft multiple times. Musing about awarding the Medal of Honor to himself is disrespectful to every American servicemember who went through hell to earn it.
