Trump Threatens To Overthrow Constitution If Congress Doesn’t Pass Voter Suppression Bill

Donald Trump took to social media to threaten unilateral action in violation of the Constitution if the GOP voter suppression bill doesn’t pass in the Senate.

Democrats have been on a winning streak across the country, including in ruby red districts, as Americans sour on Trump and a subservient Republican Party. With the economy continuing to worsen, ICE agents executing Americans, embarrassment on the international stage, and Trump continuing to be a demented wannabe dictator, voters appear ready to trigger a blue wave in November that will place Democrats in control of the House and possibly even the Senate.

This has Trump in an absolute panic as he desperately wants to stay in power without oversight or any checks and balances to stop him. So, he wants to rig the 2026 midterms via legislation that would undermine the voting rights of tens of millions of Americans, particularly women.

The SAVE Act would require voters to jump through extra hoops to cast a ballot. If they don’t have a US passport, they could be denied. If their married name doesn’t match the name on their birth certificate, they could also be denied. The bill has already passed by the narrowest margin in the House, but now faces a Senate where 60 votes are required to send it to the White House. Republicans simply do not have the votes.

That’s why Trump is now throwing a tantrum and threatening to violate the Constitution itself if he doesn’t get his way.

“The Democrats refuse to vote for Voter I.D., or Citizenship, ” Trump wrote on his social media platform. “The reason is very simple — They want to continue to cheat in Elections. This was not what our Founders desired. I have searched the depths of Legal Arguments not yet articulated or vetted on this subject, and will be presenting an irrefutable one in the very near future. There will be Voter I.D. for the Midterm Elections, whether approved by Congress or not! Also, the People of our Country are insisting on Citizenship, and No Mail-In Ballots, with exceptions for Military, Disability, Illness, or Travel.”

In fact, there were no photographic identification requirements when the Founders wrote the Constitution. Voter ID laws requiring a person to produce photo identification did not exist until after 2006. And because people would be forced to pay a fee to obtain this documentation, it’s basically a poll tax, which is unconstitutional.

As for Trump’s threat, it’s also blatantly unconstitutional as the Founders purposely left the office of the presidency without any role in determining the election process. Article 1, Section 4, Clause 1 of the Constitution states:

The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of chusing Senators.

Trump absolutely CANNOT dictate voting laws. He would be literally overthrowing the Constitution otherwise. It appears likely that the Senate will block this voter suppression bill. But Americans should be ready and willing to drag Trump kicking and screaming out of the White House if he dares to follow through with this un-American and authoritarian threat.
