As Donald Trump and Republicans continue to repeat election fraud lies after their candidates were soundly defeated in the solid blue state of California on Tuesday, veteran CNN journalist Charles Blow took Trump pundit Hal Lambert to the woodshed for pushing the same lies.
Voters overwhelmingly vote by mail in California, the most populous state in the nation. So, it’s understandable that it takes time to count the votes there, especially since state law requires election workers to compare signatures on ballots with registration forms. This is a lengthy process.
California law also sets a two-week deadline to finish counting votes. Still, officials were able to call races, and Democrats won the gubernatorial primary and the primary race for Los Angeles mayor. And since state law says the top two candidates from any party move on to the final election in November, Republicans were shut out of the race for mayor because Spencer Pratt finished in third behind two Democrats.
He was never going to win since Los Angeles is a blue city, but that didn’t stop Republicans from immediately crying foul and hurling accusations of voter fraud. When Trump claimed “rigged elections” during an interview on Sunday, he threw a tantrum and walked out after Kristen Welker challenged him to present evidence.
On CNN on Tuesday, one of Trump’s defenders attempted to push his election fraud lies, only to get kneecapped by Charles Blow, who called Hal Lambert a liar to his face.
“I just believe that this is a news show on a news channel. I have an ethical responsibility to say that you are lying,” Blow said. “You are lying.”
“You don’t call me a liar on national TV, sir!” Lambert complained. “Do not call me a liar on national TV, sir.”
“LIAR!” Blow doubled down. “I can spell it too. I have an ethical responsibility. If people are going to go over here and poison voters’ views of an election system that has no proof that it is rigged in any way, spouting the same lie that the President is spouting, we have an ethical responsibility at this table in a news show, on a news channel, to call that out. And I’m going to do that. You can huff and puff. You can huff and puff and be mad all you want, and I don’t care.”
Indeed, Trump and his Republican supporters have not offered a single shred of evidence to prove any of their claims. This has been their standard accusation every time their party loses a race. It’s a tired accusation, and they have zero evidence backing it up. Uttering such accusations without any evidence should disqualify every Republican who repeats them from being able to run for office.
