The White House does not belong to the president, who is only a temporary resident. But Donald Trump Jr. insulted the American people this week by referring to the executive residence as his “dad’s house.”
Imagine for a moment that former President Barack Obama’s daughters had taken to social media to refer to the White House as their dad’s property. Now imagine Hunter Biden referring to it as his dad’s house. Of course, this didn’t happen, but you just know Republicans and their supporters would have thrown a temper tantrum about it.
They would call it disrespectful and insulting to the American people. After all, the White House belongs to the people, not the current president. Presidents come and go. They don’t own the building. When one president leaves office, their family and belongings move out.
Donald Trump, however, seems to think he owns all of Washington DC, including the White House. He has demolished White House history, including the Rose Garden, trees planted by former presidents, and the entire East Wing, guaranteeing that Americans will never get to experience it. And it’s all so he can turn the building and grounds into his own personal vanity project.
It’s disgusting. But Trump’s namesake son decided to fan the flames further on Monday morning by referring to the White House as his “dad’s house” in a social media post announcing his stay at the residence for a “sleepover.”
“Sleepover at dad’s house,” Junior wrote. “It never isn’t surreal to be able to witness this incredible slice of Americana. Just an absolute honor.”
Yeah, Americana that his father has ruined for everyone else. The executive mansion is not a property that any president can just change on a whim when it suits them. Legitimate historical preservation committees must be consulted. Congress must grant permission. Trump has ignored these steps as if he intends to stay there forever.
Letting him stay to continue his desecration of the White House grounds is unacceptable. He and his family should be evicted. And then they should be prosecuted and locked up. Then they can call their prison cells “home.”
