When French Queen Marie Antoinette made a flippant remark in reference to the starving people in her country by saying, “Let them eat cake,” she lost her head for it by guillotine. Now, a House Republican is telling hungry people across the United States to “eat Ramen.”
Grocery prices are still high as inflation continues due to Donald Trump’s tariffs and his unprovoked war against Iran. Republicans also slashed food stamps and SNAP, pushing millions of American families into food insecurity, something the Trump administration has been bragging about.
SNAP and other food benefits only represent a fraction of federal funding, far less than the billions of dollars Trump and the GOP have been wasting on war and Trump’s DC makeover that nobody in the country asked for or wants. What the people DO want is affordable healthcare and food. But Republicans are content with letting kids starve even though their budget cuts have not done a damn thing to lower the deficit or the national debt, which is now a record $40 trillion. Over a quarter of the debt was incurred under Trump.
No one in this country should go hungry. Every person here should be able to eat the food they need. But Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas), who is already on his way out of Congress after voters rejected him in favor of someone even more MAGA, took to social media to criticize college students for complaining about the rising cost of food.
“Stop whining, get a job, eat Ramen like the rest of us did in college, on a budget with 4 roommates,” he wrote. Crenshaw went on to accuse the students of being communists.
This is the kind of flippant remark about hunger that should result in mass riots across the country and the end of the Republican Party. Heads should roll. One commenter noted in response to Crenshaw’s post that the price of Ramen has skyrocketed 300 percent since Crenshaw’s college days. It’s still relatively cheap, but not something that anyone should have to live on.
Income inequality is also worse in the United States now than it was in France just before the French Revolution. Republicans and their extreme obsession with unfettered capitalism are killing us. The question is, are we going to keep letting them?
