Donald Trump has accused six Democratic lawmakers of sedition for rightfully pointing out that members of the United States military have the right to refuse to obey unlawful orders that violate the Constitution and international law. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) is now condemning him.
Senator Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), along with five other Democrats with military and intelligence backgrounds, released a video reminding troops that they have a duty to follow only lawful orders, as carrying out an illegal order can result in prosecution. They did NOT call on the military to refuse orders in general, so nothing they did should even remotely be considered sedition.
But Trump and his lackey, Pete Hegseth, are doing just that, even going so far as to threaten to recall Kelly to active duty for a court-martial, which Senator Ruben Gallego had strong words for in response earlier this week.
Few Republicans have spoken up, but Senator Lisa Murkowski, despite her lack of a spine when it comes to casting her Senate vote, defended Kelly in a social media post on Tuesday.
“Senator Kelly valiantly served our country as an aviator in the U.S. Navy before later completing four space shuttle missions as a NASA astronaut,” she wrote. “To accuse him and other lawmakers of treason and sedition for rightfully pointing out that servicemembers can refuse illegal orders is reckless and flat-out wrong. The Department of Defense and FBI surely have more important priorities than this frivolous investigation.”
Indeed, the Department of Defense and the FBI should focus on more pressing matters. Instead, they are taking up Trump’s demand for the persecution of his political opponents. It’s a true witch hunt. If anything, this is an admission that Trump absolutely is giving or plans to give illegal orders to the military, which has already been sent to terrorize American cities in violation of federal law.
Frankly, it’s long past due for the military to make a choice here. They swore an oath to fight against all enemies of the Constitution, both foreign AND domestic. Trump and his band of fellow Nazis certainly fit the definition of domestic enemies. They can either join the Nazis or resist them. If they choose the former, they will have betrayed their oath, disgraced the uniform they wear, and guaranteed that they will be lined up right beside Trump in America’s version of the Nuremberg Trials.
