Donald Trump is so desperate to have his name on everything so he can have a physical legacy that he has resorted to bribery. As he continues to withhold federal infrastructure funding to New York, Trump is using the money as leverage to force Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to agree to name things after him.
Trump has already illegally slapped his name on the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the US Institute of Peace. He has also slapped his name on immigration gold cards, a pharmaceutical program, and a savings account that is definitely (wink wink) not a scam. In addition, Trump has named a class of battleships after himself and intends to add a massive ballroom to the White House. He’s even planning to build a monument that would dwarf just about everything in our nation’s capital and name it after himself.
Usually, things like this happen after a president leaves office or dies. But Trump’s ego can’t wait that long, so he’s using any means necessary to stroke it now before he strokes out. That includes an effort to force Schumer into supporting legislation to rename Penn Station in New York and Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C., after him as well.
The Gateway Project connecting New York and New Jersey via a new rail tunnel has been on pause since Trump withheld the funding last year. But now he’s using it as leverage.
According to CNN:
‘In exchange for the money, Schumer had to agree to rename New York’s Penn Station and Washington’s Dulles International Airport after Trump.
The startling offer, which was described by two people familiar with the conversation, was swiftly rejected by Schumer, who told the president he didn’t have the power to deliver on such an unorthodox request.‘
This is the behavior of a petty tyrant who knows his time is running out. He knows he’ll be relegated to a mere footnote in history, but he thinks slapping his name on everything means he gets to manufacture his own legacy. He believes that by adding his name to everything, people will look at all of those things and think that our society honored Trump as a great man. But that only works if society itself does the honoring.
By trying to manufacture his own legacy by hook or by crook, Trump looks more pathetic. He doesn’t deserve any honors, and his name should be removed from everything he has stained with it.
