Senator Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) made a powerful statement during a press conference on Monday in which he also took direct aim at Pete Hegseth for acting like a child playing army instead of being a professional Secretary of Defense.
Hegseth, at Donald Trump’s direction, has been waging a witch hunt against Kelly ever since he and five of his Democratic colleagues reminded our troops to only obey lawful orders because they have a duty to refuse illegal orders, especially since “just following orders” is not a viable defense in court.
Kelly has been threatened with a Pentagon investigation and court-martial even as reports have surfaced that Hegseth may have committed a war crime, or murder, by ordering a second missile strike against survivors in the aftermath of a strike on a boat in the Caribbean.
During a press conference, Kelly took on Trump and Hegseth for trying to silence dissent through intimidation, saving his most damning barbs for Hegseth.
“I mean, think about this: He runs around on a stage talking about lethality and warrior ethos and killing people. We have the most competent, capable military this planet has ever seen by far. That’s not the message that needs to come from the secretary of defense,” Kelly told the assembled reporters in the room. “He runs around on a stage like he’s a 12-year-old playing army. And it is ridiculous, it is embarrassing. And I can’t imagine what our allies think of looking at that guy in this job, one of the most important jobs in our country.”
Indeed, Hegseth is so unprofessional that he took to social media to post a meme depicting Franklin the Turtle firing missiles at boats, which also drew a rebuke from Kelly.
“He is in the national command authority for nuclear weapons, and last night he’s putting out on the internet turtles with rocket-propelled grenades,” Kelly said. “I mean, have you seen this? This is the Secretary of Defense. This is not a serious person. He should have been fired after Signalgate, and then every day after that.”
