Texas Republicans passed new redistricting maps on Tuesday despite heavy opposition from Democrats, leading Democratic state Senator Roland Gutierrez to blast the GOP for being Donald Trump’s “lapdogs.”
Trump ordered Texas Republicans to gerrymander a new congressional map to steal five seats in the House of Representatives to offset Democratic gains in 2026, thereby preventing Congress from flipping blue.
Texas Democrats are fighting back. State House Democrats have been denying Republicans a quorum to prevent passage of the scheme because they are currently out of the state, triggering temper tantrums by Governor Greg “Hot Wheels” Abbott, Trump, and just about every Republican in the cult.
However, Republicans in the state Senate were able to pass the gerrymandered maps that Trump commanded them to draw, leading to a walkout by Democrats and a fiery response from state Senator Roland Gutierrez:
“I’m not going back into that farce, into that bullsh*t room,” Gutierrez said during a press conference. “They would rather be Donald Trump’s lapdogs than do what is necessary for the people of Texas.”
Indeed, Gutierrez spoke about Texas’ “woeful” education system and failure to provide flood warning systems to communities before and since the disastrous flooding that took 137 lives, including dozens of children.
Here’s the video via Facebook: Redistricting is only supposed to occur every ten years after a national census, which is constitutionally mandated. Trump and the GOP are clearly scared of losing power, so they are resorting to cheating to win. Should Republicans lose control of Congress in 2026, there would finally be a check on Trump’s authoritarian agenda. Texas, once a symbol of American independence, is now nothing more than a dictator’s lapdog.
